Directory of Family Members
A German-speaking clan that was once found mostly in the Canton of Bern, in
Switzerland, is now scattered to the four corners of the earth, using so many surname
variations that we don't even recognize our own distant cousins. Here, presented in both alphabetical and geographical form, is a
directory of people of common Swiss-German "Krähenbühl/Kraehenbuehl" heritage.

- Family migrations. From Pennsylvania originally, this portion of the family moved west
with the Mormons (or LDS) through Ohio and generally stayed with the flock, until the
assassination of Smith, then some went west with Brigham Young, and the rest stayed in
Iowa - Council Bluff, then my grandfather moved south to Missouri. There are relatives
from the Oklahoma area, that were part of the group that received land grants from the
Revolutionary War and lived in North Carolina and Virginia, all with the spelling
Graybill. Notables- Arron Graybill - Half brother to great-grandfather Willis,
served in the 5th Iowa Cavalry, Company B and was killed on a feint south of Atlanta under
Kirkpatrick. Several other distant relations (as far as I can tell much against type for
the age) signed petitions against their commanders in the war for being drunk on duty.
There is one relative with the Graybill spelling that fought under Jackson in the
Shenendoah campaigns and wrote about it.
- Comments: I was raised in Missouri, spent time on both coasts, some with
the Navy, some with ex-wives.

- Family Migrations:
- Two brothers, Samuel and Niklaus, went from Switzerland
(Signau, Kanton Bern) in 1857 to Brazil. They were farmers and were
responsable for the foundation of a german community in Campinas, SP, Brasil,
named Friedburg (Friburgo in Portuguese). Now a days the members of that
family live in Campinas, Indaiatuba, Piracicaba and surrounding. The most of
them are Lutheran and are living in the cities, working no more in farms.
There is a great number of Krähenbühl descendants in Brasil.
- Comments:
- My Father was Lutheran but my mother wasn't. So he had to change his
religion to marry my mother... They lived very well each other for 11 years.
- We try to mantain swiss traditions in our community in Helvetia. We sing
"Volkslied" and our children integrate a dance group there.
- Our language in Brasil is Portuguese but we can also speak German. My husband,
our tochter and I lived in Germany (Oldenburg) during four years.

- Family migrations: I grew up in Lancaster County, Pa and moved with my family to
suburban Chicago, Illinois following my high school graduation. After attending Goshen
College, Ann and I moved to Denver, Colorado. Following seven years there we were
transferred (by the construction company that I worked for) to Kansas City, MO. and from
there on to suburban Boston, MA. After a year in the Boston area we decided to chuck the
city life and we moved to rural, upstate New York where we have resided for the past seven
years.
- Comments: Ann and I were married in 1978 while at Goshen College, Goshen, Indiana. Our
life is centered around our three sons and their many interests which include little
league baseball, ice hockey, skating, skiing, computer games, hiking, camping, school band
and chorus, and fighting amongst themselves. As a family we enjoy the many outdoor
activities that this area offers, both winter and summer. Ann is an RN at the local County
Hospital. We would be delighted to host anyone of the extended Krahenbuhl family should
they be visiting our beautiful part of the world.

- Jacob Kraybill(1742-1810) and Elizabeth Delabaugh(1755-1845)
- (Kraybill tradition has it that John or Johannes Krebiel was the original
emigrant in our line, however, Marty Graybill has aquired a copy of Johannes'
will which has no mention of Jacob plus tax records showing that Johannes was
already here in 1724, well before the immigration date of 1753. Richard W.
Davis' book, "Emigrants, Refugees and Prisoners, Vol. 2" tells us it
was Johannes's brother, Peter, who arrived on the ship, "Patience", in
1753, but died soon after and was the father of Jacob. This matches Dr. Ira
Kraybill's description, "(Jacob) came to America as a boy of twelve, as his
grandson--my grandfather--told me many years ago. He was born in Switzerland, or
along the Rhine, in 1742. We do not surely know his father's name but it was
PROBABLY John. The Snyder County Graybills trace their ancestry to John Graybill,
who they say was Jacob's brother. This John's father was John, born in
Switzerland. John, the head of the family, came to America about 1753. We know
nothing more about him.")
- According to "Emigrants...":
- Peter Krehbiel(abt.1710-aft.1753) and ?

- Ulrich Krahenbuhl(1590-?) and Madlena Stauffer
- Wilhelm Krahenbuhl(1555-?) and Ursula Kunzi
- Christian Krahenbuhl(1525-?) and Anna Hofer
- Family Migrations:

Growing up I wasn't
too happy with my surname and got teased about it quite a lot. I also was
called "crayfish" and even worse "clayballs". Now that I'm an adult I quite
like my name since in this part of the country it's unusual and distinct. I
now live in San Francisco, California. My brother James Colby also lives in
the city and has a son called Diamond Xochi Atom Smasher Gutierrez Kraybill.
(there's the Berkely hippy influence for you I guess).

- John Jacob Krehbiel and Susanna
- Jost Krehbiel (1671-1722) and Magdalena
Migration: Johann and Anna (Stucky) Krehbiel migrated to the US in 1874 with their
children when Jacob P. (my great-grandfather) was 18 years old. Jacob P. Krehbiel settled
in McPherson County, Kansas. He became a land owner and farmer in McPherson County and a
prominent business man in the town of Moundridge. Jacob P. was nicknamed "Red
Jake" because of his ruddy completion and red beard. (Much information on Krehbiel
family history is found in the book - The Jacob P. Krehbiel Family Record, 1671 to
1976, by Harley J. Stucky.)
Comments: My father, Bill J. Krehbiel, grew up on a farm between Moundridge and Inman,
Kansas. When he graduated from high school he joined the army and served on the front
lines as a rifleman in Patton's 3rd Army during World War II. He recently wrote a book, L:
The Pride of Willing and Able. This book records the history of the 3rd Army 80th
Division's L Company during World War II and is full of firsthand accounts from several of
the men who fought in the 80th Division. I am extremely fascinated with this book; it
provides insights to what the war was like on the front lines. I am very proud of my
father and his decorated service during World War II.

- Comments: I have a copy of a very detailed family tree, running from Jost through
William John, which I obtained from Tom Krehbiel of Buffalo, NY. Tom is probably the
closest to a current historian we have in this branch.

- I am an eighth generation descendant of Jost Krehbiel (d.1722) from
Swiss Mennonite branch of the family. I'm interested in corresponding with
anyone researching the Jost Krehbiel line.
- Family Migrations:
- My grandfather (Philip Krehbiel) was born May 26, 1878 near Pandora, Ohio
(Putman County). He was the 11th child born to his parents, Henry and Anna
(Sutter) Krehbiel. Twelve children were born to his parents eight lived to
adulthood, seven married, six of the seven had children. His parents came to
America from District Dubuo, Wolhynia, Russia in the migration of 1874.
These Swiss (Volhynian) Mennonites originated in the beautiful Emmenthal
Valley in Switzerland. Persecution drove them to the Palatinate in Germany
and southeastern France from whence they traveled to Volhynia, a region of
the Ukraine. From there, they migrated to the United States in 1874 settling
in the Moundridge community with a sister settlement at Freeman, South
Dakota.
- Why my grandfather's family chose Pandora, Ohio I don't know. It would be
interesting to know because the Swiss are among those who emigrated as a
body ( "in early spring of 1874, 10 families from the Swiss
congregations in Volhynia under the leadership of Andreas Shrag" left
Russia - the remainder, about 150 families, left the latter part of July
1874).

WWII. I have numerous family members in Washington and Oregon, including my brother
