A Wooded Hilltop Where Crows Gathered

Edward Earl Reeves-Graybill of Spencerville, Maryland lists numerous Swiss variations of the family name and says they "all have the same literal meaning--crowhill," noting that the German word "Kraehen" means crow and "buehl" means hill. Reeves-Graybill also quotes a German-born American biology professor as saying that the name means "a wooded hilltop where the crows gathered." --from The History of the Kraybill Family in America (out of print).
