Dates and Villages of Surname Registration in Switzerland

The book Familiennamenbuch der Schweiz gives some historical indication of the distribution of Krähenbühls in Switzerland, by listing family registration information.

Surname registration occurs when a person registers in a particular village for citizenship. Every person is required to register with the town/township civil registrars office. This surname book shows the first registration of a surname for each village. Once that registration takes place, every birth, death, marriage that occurs, no matter where in Switzerland, for that family, (should) be registered in the original village. In Switzerland, people are citizens of their village first, then their canton, and lastly their country. (Thanks to Doug Schorey for passing along this information. - Gene)
